The Lighthouse Assistive Technology instructors help individuals who are blind or have low vision learn new ways to access computers and other technology.

Through a variety of available adaptive technologies, including magnification software, voice output, and/or refreshable Braille devices, clients are able to continue using computers at work and at home.

Clients also have the opportunity to learn to use the adaptive features on Apple products the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad. Read books, listen to music, watch movies, take notes, edit documents, and even print from these devices using their built-in applications: VoiceOver and Zoom.

Vision impairments including low vision and blindness, also work with individuals experiencing other disabilities

Eligibility criteria:
No eligibility criteria, an interest in learning assistive technology.

Additional notes:
Assistive Training is provided at the vision rehabilitation center, at home, in the workplace, or even remotely. Training is available in a wide variety of adaptive software and devices including but not limited to: ZoomText and Magic magnification software, JAWS and NVDA voice output screen readers, OCR software to convert a printed document into an accessible format that can be read on an iPad, iPhone or a computer, Barcode Scanners, and Labelers, Typing software, Kindle and other book readers and apps, Money identifiers

In addition to helping clients explore funding solutions for purchasing equipment, including assistance applying for grant support in purchasing a device or piece of equipment, for some clients we can set up a payment plan whereby a device or piece of equipment is given to the individual who then makes payments over time to cover the cost of the device or piece of equipment.
